Zinc Air Batteries

There are two types of air cell replacements for mercury cells.... the "zinc-air" and the "Wein Cell" The Wein Cell is a zinc air cell with a "proprietary" electrolyte, and it is supposed to put out 1.35v (like mercury) instead of the 1.4v of zinc-air. From what I've read, some people claim that there is no difference despite the higher price of the Wein Cell.

Both types share the following problems and features:

  • They have long (10 yr) shelf life before they are opened.
  • Once the seal is removed, the electrolyte will start to dry out, and the cell will stop functioning once it does (about 2 to 6 months of normal use). Replacing the seal betwen camera uses (or just putting a piece of tape over the hole) may extend the life of the cell.
  • They can take 15 to 30 minutes to reach full power after removing the seal.
  • The battery must have access to air to function; sealed battery compartments can pose a problem in extreme cases (drill a tiny hole).
Zinc-Air cells put out a very uniform voltage over their useful life, similar to the mercury cells that they replace.
