The type K or Eveready 538 4.5v battery
I get questions all the time about the type K battery, so I thought I’d jot some notes here so I wouldn’t have to answer dozens of emails.
First, they have not been made for years, anywhere in the world. I do not have any for sale. If you want a dead one to rebuild, you'll have to scour the flea market and tag sale circuit for a camera that might have one in it.
This battery was used in numerous, high end 110 Pocket Instamatic cameras, and in some others, such as the Minolta Autopack 70. I understand that it was also used in some medical equipment. The battery had 3 1.5v button cells connected in series in a plastic housing that was formed in such a way that it would be impossible to insert it incorrectly. I feel that the camera and battery manufacturers have abandoned us on this one.
One battery manufacturer I spoke with said that it would cost thousands to tool up to produce replacements for them. I have seen some specimens. I dissected one with a hope of being able to reload it. What I found was three LR44 alkaline cells welded together in series, with the contacts formed out of the same material as the interconnecting links. Some I have seen have three 625's inside.
